Giving Up Your Pet

Like every animal shelter, or sanctuary, Pets Alive has a limit as to how many dogs or cats we can take in. Maybe people have a need to surrender special needs animals as well and our staff and finances are limited as far as how many we can take. We'd love to help everyone and take in every animal in need, but obviously no place can do that. We review each surrender request on a case-by-case basis and take in the animals we feel we can work with or can adopt out. We also have a number of what we call "lifers" which will probably live out their lives here at Pets Alive. Obviously we can only take in so many of those as well.

So in order to help you and to utilize our time as best we can we ask that if you need to surrender an animal you follow these simple directions.

Surrenders
TO SURRENDER A CAT, please email: mycat@petsalive.com. Include a digital picture of the cat if you can, the description of why you need to give the cat or kittens up. Let us know if the cat is spayed or neutered, up to date on shots and if the cat has any medical concerns or issues. Please be sure to include information about the cats temperament, personality, and any aggressive or behavior issues it might have.

Pets Alive requires that all cats surrendered to us are spayed or neutered (we can do this and you can cover the cost if need be), up to date on all shots, FIV and FELV tested, treated with Frontline immediately prior to coming here, and a copy of their medical records must accompany them. We will then quarantine the cat(s) in a separate room (there are no cages used at Pets Alive) for two weeks and then they will be introduced into one of our many cat rooms.

There is a $200 surrender fee for all cats (this does NOT apply to rescues or other shelters - this is for private resident surrenders only). You may also be required to leave a credit card in case of any serious medical concerns the first two weeks. After that we will assume all medical responsibility, however we have been duped in the past into taking cats that turned out to have serious and expensive medical conditions and now this is a requirement to make sure we do not get stuck with thousands of dollars of medical expenses for a cat that is already known to be ill.

BEFORE surrendering your cat, we request that you look at the following and see if any of these are the reasons you need to give up your pet. If so please read the accompanying articles. 95% of all cats that need to be surrendered can be kept in the home and their problems resolved quite simply if you are willing to put a little effort and love into it. Please consider reading these and trying to keep your pet with you. Your pet and you will ultimately be better off!
TO SURRENDER A DOG, please email: mydog@petsalive.com. Include a digital picture of the dog if you can, the description of why you need to give the dog up. Let us know if the dog is spayed or neutered, up to date on shots and if it has any medical concerns or issues. Please be sure to include information about the dogs temperament, personality, and any aggressive or behavior issues it might have.

Pets Alive requires that all dogs surrendered to us are spayed or neutered (we can do this and you can cover the cost if need be), up to date on all shots, Heartworm and Lyme tested, treated with Frontline immediately prior to coming here, and a copy of their medical records must accompany them. We will then quarantine the dog(s) in our kennel for two weeks and then they will be brought into one of our outdoor runs (weather permitting).
