Welcome to Pets Alive!
Pets Alive is a no-kill animal shelter, located in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains, about 1 1/2 hours from New York City. Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and place animals in need. Victims of neglect, abuse, and violence, many of them have special needs and have been rejected by other organizations.

Animals at the sanctuary range from dogs and cats to farm animals, exotic birds, and many others. Many of the animals at Pets Alive are older, have special needs or require special care. Read our full story here.

Pets Alive Jewelry Fundraiser

Local couture jewelry store Desires by Mikolay will be holding a charity event night on November 28, 2009, from 5:00 to 9:00 PM, to benefit Pets Alive. During this event, you will have the opportunity to purchase exquisite fine jewelry - including Mikolay's own couture collection of hand-carved 18-karat gold designs - at a 15% discount. Desires will donate an additional 15% of all proceeds to Pets Alive.

The night will close with a raffle, the entire proceeds of which will also benefit Pets Alive. The event is open to the public and we hope that you will attend! Animal welfare has been a personal priority for Tara and Scott ever since their adoption of two shelter dogs 5 years ago. "Anyone who has adopted an animal from a shelter knows the joy of bonding with the perfect animal companion - but also the heartbreak of knowing that the pets that were not chosen are likely to be euthanized," says Tara. "It's a pleasure to be able to support a no-kill shelter committed to the future of these animals. Our goal is to raise at least $20,000 for this cause."

The Saturday evening reception is a special occasion, offering hor d'oeuvres courtesy of Susan Lawrence (www.susanlawrence.com) and fine wines donated by The Wine Enthusiast (www.thewineenthusiast.com). Jeweler Scott Mikolay has designed jewelry especially for the benefit. These very special jewelry pieces are heavy, hand-crafted of pure sterling silver, hanging on ultra-hip, edgy bead chains. The women's design features a disk necklace with a paw center, and the men's design takes the form of a dog tag. Both are fashionable statement pieces that will stand the test of time! They will be available for purchase on the Desires website (www.desiresbymikolay.com) from November 1st to December 30th. Absolutely 100% of the proceeds from these pieces will be donated to Pets Alive. Desires by Mikolay is located at 55 King Street in the heart of Chappaqua. For more information and to RSVP, please contact the store at 914.238.2223.

November is Adopt-A-Senior pet month!
At animal shelters and rescue groups across the nation, there are an abundance of healthy senior pets looking for a special home to cherish them for the rest of their lives. Although shaping the life of a youngster sounds appealing, giving a second chance to an older companion can be equally rewarding. They like to share quiet moments, are already trained and usually do not chew or scratch everything in sight. Taking a great idea from the Warwick Humane Society, we are joining them in offering senior citizens the ability to adopt a senior pet with NO ADOPTION FEE (for this month only). Likewise, anyone else that adopts a senior pet this month, we will take $75 off the adoption fee. Please consider a senior dog or cat in your home. Many of us at Pets Alive have taken seniors home and I don't know of a single one of us that ever regretted it. They give back so much. Below we have selected two seniors to feature this month, but many more are available here. Please check our adoptable animals listings or come in to meet some of them.

Maybe you are reluctant to adopt a senior dog because you fear that your time with your new best friend will be short, bringing that painful time of loss closer. But the privilege of loving a senior dog makes every single day special, as you and your companion share love, friendship, and a special relationship that grows stronger with the knowledge that you have given this fine old dog or cat a second chance at life. The love that grows from this knowledge is stronger than the pain of eventual separation. So spread the word! Adopting a senior dog or cat is a wonderful experience for you and your new pet. You will gain a faithful companion. You will save a life. And don't forget, senior dogs/cats and senior people bring out the best in each other. Old dogs and cats make great friends!

Biggie - dog of the month Biggie-Smalls
Biggie Smalls was a sad case. He has a medical condition that could have been very easily treated, but his former owners chose to neglect him & his needs. Biggie suffered greatly because of their irresponsibility. He weighed over 140 pounds and should have weighed half that. He was dumped at a shelter that promptly put him on their euthanasia list, since he was having trouble breathing, walking & standing due to his size. We heard about his case, and just fell in love with this sweet dog. Pets Alive took him here and immediately did testing on him and discovered his EASILY TREATED thyroid condition. He is truly a staff and volunteer FAVORITE. We LOVE him. He has now lost almost all the weight he needed to and is ready to go into a forever home. Thyroid medication is just a small pill once a day and is very inexpensive. This dog really deserves a loving home with a loving family who will take care of him & ensure that he has many happy years left to live. He is estimated to be about nine years old. Please find it in your heart to bring him home & give him the love he so richly deserves. Fill out an adoption application so you can meet him!

Sheba - cat of the month Sheba
Queen Sheba is a regal 13-year-old lady looking for love. She is great with people and with other cats. She loves to play hide-and-seek in cabinets, and she loves to talk and will carry on full conversations with you. Notice that her nose is the same color as her fur? She is one of those rare cats that also love to be cuddled and even carried! Our cat manager even dances with her. This is a very special, adoring and loving cat. She was abandoned here many, many years ago when her family moved, and she is still looking for a family that will cherish her. Fill out an adoption application so you can meet her!
