Pets Alive Animal Camp!
Animal Camp is a one-week summer day camp program open to children between the ages of 9 and 15 years old, that provides a unique education program that offers kids the privilege to learn about rescued animals and life at a no-kill sanctuary through fun and exciting hands-on experiences.

This program is a fun-filled way for kids to learn more about dogs, cats, horses, pigs, and other companion animals. It is designed to foster awareness about animals and will include tours, guest speakers, animal-related education, hands-on experiences working with the animals, crafts, professional demonstrations, discussions, and plenty of fun.

The campers will leave the program with the ability to think critically, but with compassion, and with an awareness of how THEY can make a positive difference in the lives of animals.

Animal camp is open to only 20 campers between the ages of 9-15 and will take place on Monday July 15th - July 19th and runs from 9am - 3pm. For more information and to register, click here.

Helping Hands and Paws:
It all started out with a phone call, as it usually does. An elderly woman in the hospital and all her cats being thrown outside by a family member. Cats everywhere. In trees. On the roof. In the garage. In the yard. In the street. Racing all around under foot. Well it turned out that the awesome folks at Mid Hudson Animal Aid had also received a call. We quickly touched base. How could we as TWO organizations better aid a situation where just one of us would be buried. Audrey, the shelter manager of Mid Hudson Animal Aid is a true pleasure to work with.

She compliments us well, because she always retains her cool and she can be polite to people even as we want to reach out and throttle them. In this case she immediately showed up with sidekick Arwen. At Pets Alive we just refer to them as the "Cat Ninja's" because that is what they are. They are just super with cats...any kind. The terrified ones, the aggressive or feral ones, the young, the old - they are just really professionals and really know how to handle themselves and the cats.

So we met over at "the location" in Maybrook and it was quite a site. Best guess was 35-40 cats (as it turned out it was closer to 50!) Could we help?

When you get phone calls like this you immediately go into over drive – where can we house the cats? How bad a shape will they be in? Where do we find the money? How fast can we get fosters? How many traps do we have? Where can we get more traps? Luckily the cat ninjas from Mid Hudson Animal Aid are cool cookies under pressure and before we could even blink Audrey had a plan laid out where Pets Alive and MidHudson would work together to save all these cats. Friday night with one last exchange we were ready for whatever Saturday morning would bring. All we knew was that by Saturday night we would be comforting and caring for some very scared and possibly sick and injured cats. How many was yet to be determined but with the help of our dedicated volunteers, we were all ready.

The first thing you learn when trapping cats is that hungry cats are easier to trap. The traps went down, and we were trapping cats as fast as we could set the traps. It really hits you – these cats are STARVING and desperate for food! Never in my wildest dreams would we imagine that by noon we would have trapped close to 35 cats!

These 35 innocent victims of a hoarding situation will be warm and have full bellies, will not have to compete for food, and will have medical attention sought for them. For some, it will be the first time in their lives.

That is when it hits you - when you see their scared, confused faces looking at you, and all you can do is keep saying "it will be okay, we got you, you’re safe". Sometimes we wonder if we say it more for them or for ourselves. To reassure ourselves that for all the bad in the world there still is good.

And there IS good. Good is evidenced by the neighbors that come to offer support, allow us to set up feeding stations in their yards, that called out to us to come and help, for organizations that are all basically broke and financially struggling but still, we work together to reach out and help animals - together.

Part one of this rescue is done, we have the cats now. They are safe, they are warm, their bellies are full, their medical needs are being met and they will never have more litters of kittens. Now comes part two and sometimes the even harder part - healing them emotionally, teaching them that it’s okay, their struggles are behind them, that they will never go hungry again, they will never be cold and we will be there for them every step of the way as they learn to trust.

So far we have many of what we affectionately call "broken cats". They need our help, and they need your help. So far two have had to have ruptured eyes removed. One had to have immediate medical care for an infected miscarriage issue. Others have injuries. Some had frostbite. Some had ring worm.

Many are semi feral or just plain terrified. All need to be altered, brought up to date on shots, seen by a vet, microchipped and provided some decent care and nutrition.

Please do not look the other way.

Abandoned but now safe:
In addition to working with MHAA to save all those cats this week, we also got a call from the Hudson Valley SPCA, Law Enforcement Division. They had a case over here in Middletown and were hoping we could help. Some people moved out of their apartment - OVER A MONTH AGO - and left their two dogs in the garage. Yes, you read that right. A month ago. Some good samaritan neighbors were feeding the dogs but had no idea what to do with them on a long term basis. Finally one of them called law enforcement. Eugene Hecht is an awesome L.E.O. and someone that really cares a GREAT DEAL about animals. He followed procedure, got a court order to seize the dogs, and was all set to take possession of them - but where would they go? Every place seemed to be full, especially for pit bulls, and especially for dogs that a rescue might not know anything about. To just say yes to taking in dogs that might have severe and expensive medical conditions, or might be aggressive, or might not be hi ghly adoptable is risky at best. But how in the world could we say no? The story tore at our hearts and so we told Eugene "YES!" - get those poor dogs out of that horrible situation and we will welcome them to Pets Alive.

And welcome them we did. They arrived about 6:30 at night and as usual, our great staff and volunteers were there to greet them and welcome them and settle them in. Thank you to Eugene at the HVSPCA, to our staff, to our volunteers and to those kind neighbors that didn't look the other way.

Working together saves lives! And lucky for us, these two dogs are pure sweethearts. They need to be altered and be seen by a vet, but they are happy and friendly and healthy! Please consider spreading the word about them, networking them and finding them a home! Mama (the b&w) is about 3 years old and Bengal is about 1.5 years old! Both are friendly and seem good with other dogs too!

The story of a little Cowboy - Pets Alive Westchester update

In rescue you learn early on to never plan out your day because inevitably you will never get to even the first item on your list. Every day you are faced with a decision, a situation, an animal in need that requires your time and attention, and let’s face it - they are so much more worthy of that time and attention than your to-do list anyway. Today was certainly one of those days.

The caretakers arrive first thing in the morning and consistently take inventory of their surroundings as they arrive. It is their routine to make sure that things are as they were left the night before- and this morning something odd caught Anna’s (PAW Lead Cat Caregiver) eye. As she walked up to the front doors she noticed a half open back pack laying directly in front of the building and as she got closer she saw why. A small puppy was lying near the bag, cold and scared. No note, no explanation, no idea how long he had been waiting there alone. Just this tiny little puppy who readily accepted a loving embrace from Anna. She immediately scooped him up and brought him in from the cold, offered him fresh water and some food. She did a quick overall assessment and saw no obvious injuries, however when she attempted to set him down the staff quickly noted that he seemed unwilling or unable to put any weight on his back leg.

We quickly determined that this was not just a simple abandonment case but with a possible injury resulting from some type of neglect or abuse as well. When an animal is found on our property it is important that we file a report with the animal control officer so that they are aware of the situation, however in light of his medical needs we felt that he would have the best opportunity to heal if he stays in our care.

Each of the staff took turns holding him, quickly gave him a name - Cowboy - and whispered softly in his ear that he was safe, he was loved and that soon he will feel better. There was just something in his eyes that made us all melt. It was obvious he was in pain, but there was something else, something deeper, something I could only describe as hope. As if he now knew that here he would have a chance. Once Vania, the full time veterinary assistant, was able to manipulate his leg she felt certain that he had a fracture of some type in his left hind leg. She was able to give him a temporary splint and called the vet hospital right away to schedule an X-Ray. There it was confirmed- Cowboy has a midshaft complete fracture of both his tibia and fibula, the two lower leg bones. In the vet’s opinion the injuries were most likely caused by some type of trauma, either accidental or intentional it’s impossible to tell.

We were given two options- we could choose to simply splint the fractures for a period of 8-10 weeks and hope that the breaks will heal properly. Cowboy would need to be on crate rest for the entire healing process, there is an inherent risk of skin infection if his splint were to get even just the slightest bit moist (which let’s face it with a puppy of his age-10-12 weeks- the odds are he will soil multiple times a day even with bathroom breaks) and there is no guarantee that after the 2-3 month period of splinting that the leg will heal properly. And if it did not heal properly Cowboy would be faced with a possible deformation of his hind leg, continued inability to put the proper weight distribution on his back end, and prolonged pain. At that time it would be necessary to surgically re fracture his leg and repair it.

The second option is to go directly to orthopedic surgery, cut out the 8-10 weeks of splint and rest, and repair the fractures immediately. The surgery must be performed by an orthopedic surgeon and will entail the placement of a bone plate to stabilize the bones at the point of fracture. Since the breaks are mid shaft there is little to no concern of possible future development issues, since bones grow from the ends and not the middle and the plate will stabilize the bone to grow in the proper way, which is not guaranteed with the splint and wait method.

After weighing our options very carefully we decided that the best option for Cowboy is surgery, however this option comes at a cost - the surgery alone was quoted at approximately $2500 and that does not include any subsequent x-rays (which will be necessary to periodically check on the healing process of the fractures) and additional care he may require.

We are certain that the surgery will repair his injury and allow him to be placed in a forever home quickly. It is our mission to provide that chance for the animals that find their way through our doors. To fix their wounds, give them a safe, warm place to lay their heads, to embrace each one as if they were our own- no matter the circumstances that brought them to us.

We are deeply saddened by our unexpected loss of Pat Whitacre.

He was an amazing man, a true friend, and mentor to many.
He had a wonderful way with people and animals alike, always there to lend a hand, answer a question or just offer support.

His passing will not only leave a tremendous void in our lives but in the lives of the many animals he has helped.

We will be honoring this great man on Sunday Feb 3, 2013 at 1:30 pm at the Church of the Infant Savior, 22 Holland Ave, Pine Bush, NY.

Pat's family has put together this obituary:

Patrick “Pat” Lee Whitacre, 62, passed away on 21, January, 2013 at his home in Middletown, New York. He was born on April 8, 1950 in Peoria, Illinois to Gerald E. (Bud) and Bernadine E. (Babe) Whitacre.

Pat graduated from Olathe High School in Olathe, Kansas in 1968. He then attended Kansas University where he received a degree in Psychology. He also received a Master Degree in Biophysics and Genetics from University of Colorado Denver.

He worked in Johnson County, KS in the mental health field for 30 years. He transferred his professional focus from humans to canines and spent the next 8 years working at Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah as a Certified Dog Trainer. He appeared on National Geographic’s DogTown. Pat recently worked at Pets Alive in Middletown, New York as a Canine Behaviorist.

He enjoyed his dogs Timber and Kipling, his cats, Buffy and Bright Eyes, good friends, music, rehabilitating the quirkiest cars, hiking, horseback riding, motorcycles, travel, and nation wide animal rescue of the most challenging and fearful dogs.

He was smart, funny, kind, accepting, and loving. He had a natural ability to story tell and a great sense of adventure. He will be missed by family and friends both two legged and four legged alike.

Pat was preceded in death by his father, Gerald E. Whitacre.

Pat is survived by his mother Bernadine “Babe” Whitacre of Olathe, Kansas his brothers and sisters: Mike (Mary Kay) Whitacre of Olathe, KS, Tom (Nancy) Whitacre of Olathe, KS, Jeri (Greg) Biggs of Wichita KS, Tim (Maria) Whitacre of Coppell TX, Kathy (Kirk) Whitacre of Topeka, KS, Lynda (Mike) Long of Germantown Hills, IL; significant other, Sandra Wilder of Kanab, Utah, and 20 nieces and nephews and 22 great nieces and nephews.
